What interior painting costs in New Zealand

Interior painting in New Zealand is typically priced per room or per square metre of wall area. Cost depends on four things: the condition of the existing surfaces, how many coats are needed, ceiling height, and the level of preparation required. A room that needs only a light sand and two topcoats costs considerably less than one requiring stopping, sealing and three coats.

We quote every job individually after seeing the space, because estimating interior work from photographs reliably produces the wrong number. Quotes are free, itemised, and carry no obligation.

What's included in an interior painting job

Every interior job we quote includes the full preparation sequence. Preparation is where a paint finish is won or lost — paint applied over poorly prepared substrate will fail regardless of its quality.

  • Protection — floors, furniture and fittings masked and covered before any work starts
  • Surface repair — filling nail holes, cracks and dents; re-stopping failed joints
  • Sanding — to a smooth, dust-free substrate
  • Sealing and undercoating — new or patched surfaces sealed before topcoats
  • Two topcoats minimum — applied to manufacturer specification
  • Cleanup — full removal of masking and debris; site left ready to use

Level 4 vs Level 5 finish — which do you need?

New Zealand plasterboard finishing follows AS/NZS 2589 levels. Level 4 is the standard residential finish and is suitable for most walls under normal lighting with matt or low-sheen paint. Level 5 adds a full skim coat across the entire surface and is recommended where critical lighting will hit the wall — large windows, wall washers, glossy paints, or dark colours.

If a wall faces a big window or takes a gloss finish, Level 5 is worth the extra cost. Under normal lighting with low-sheen paint, Level 4 is the sensible choice. We will tell you honestly which one a given wall needs rather than defaulting to the more expensive option.

Paints we use and why

We use premium New Zealand-formulated paints chosen for our conditions — high UV, high humidity, and coastal salt exposure across much of the North Island. For interiors this means washable low-sheen acrylics in living areas and moisture-resistant formulations in kitchens and bathrooms.

Low-VOC and zero-VOC options are available on request and are worth specifying for bedrooms, nurseries and any room that will be occupied soon after the work finishes.

How long an interior repaint takes

A single room typically takes one to two days including preparation and drying time between coats. A three-bedroom house interior generally runs five to ten working days depending on the condition of the surfaces and how much of the house is being done at once.

We can usually work room by room so you can stay in the house throughout. If you would rather have it done in one continuous run while you are away, tell us at quoting stage and we will schedule accordingly.
